"I sailed with Resolution from Bermuda to New Bedford.
I have been lucky with some great travel experiences that include hiking the Great Wall of China, traveling from Paris to the French Riveria on moped, and sailing around the Great Lakes. My sail from Bermuda to New Bedford on Resolution surpasses all of these. It is hard to describe the calm and the exhilaration one can feel as the Resolution cuts through the waves with a balance between force and finesse. I owned a Cape Dory 28 and I am familiar with the Alberg designs and their sailing characteristics. But Resolution, with its ketch design, was a notch above anything I could imagine. It is a meticulously maintained, beautiful, and capable boat. I loved it.
Joe, of course, is what makes it all work so well. He brings a calming joy to the boat. His skill set and approach to every task are remarkable. This is clear when he is cooking, navigating, dealing with sail trim, story-telling, and teaching. He brings it all. I came away with a deeper understanding of sailing, boat maintenance, safety at sea, commercial fishing techniques, cooking, environmental issues, sea currents, and hospitality. Joe makes everyone on the crew comfortable, which helps us form close relationships. While long passages do this naturally, Joe helps it along.
I think a lot of people buy sailboats with the distant hope to take their boat on an off-shore adventure. They spend an enormous amount of time, thought, money, and back breaking labor. Then life happens and they never quite make that trip. This was my story. Walk around any boat yard and look at all the boats on the hard. Most will have similar stories. Getting off-shore on Resolution makes so much more sense. Then if you love it, Joe will likely advise you on the next steps to take to get a boat that fits you.

"The time I got to spend on board Resolution with Joe was exactly what you hope for when you sign up for a trip like this. Never mind the dream that is being on a sailboat in a beautiful Bermuda anchorage, as well as traveling across the perfectly blue Atlantic without another boat in sight for three days.
But the important stuff ..
#1 being safety. There was never a time during storms, dense fog, or 8’-10’ seas where I ever felt nervous or unsafe. Joe takes command of the boat precisely like you would expect from a commercial skipper. From thorough safety briefing, to making night watch schedules that work for everybody.. He makes it abundantly clear he’s always available and genuinely felt to me like he was easily approachable. Thanks to Joes leadership you truly feel like everybody knows their role and that things will go as smoothly as the situation could permit in any emergency.
At the heart of the trips safety culture lies the boat. Joes boat was not only originally built for offshore adventure, but he has clearly invested greatly in upgrades and safety equipment that make this thing feel safer than a modern day cruise ship. One of my favorite parts about the trip was just sitting in the cockpit feeling and watching Resolution work her way through the waves. It’s hard to explain, but even a novice like myself can feel how happy the boat was to be in the deep blue water that we trusted her to move us through.
Apart from safety, other elements of the trip were also satisfying. Joe catered the trip with plenty of snacks and high quality healthy meals that filled you up and helped fight off any sea sickness. The social company you get on this kind of trip is excellent. You’re clearly going to be with a group of people that all have common values and interests. Everyone of course has their own unique story that you will no doubt get to know over the multi day passage .. unplugged from the rest of the world so filled with chaos and conflict.
If you’re coming aboard to learn then I can’t think of a better, nicer, more knowledgeable and experienced guy to be around for 5 days. He knows everything about boats, the ocean, the birds and other sea life .. Joe just does things the right way and being around him will no doubt make you better than before you stepped aboard.
